About the Blue Mountains Dog Training Club
Blue Mountains Dog Training Club is affiliated with the Royal New South Wales Canine Council (an initiative of DOGS NSW) and promotes caring, responsible dog ownership while providing its members with support, advice and professional instruction.
We are a not-for-profit volunteer-run association, allowing us to keep our fees to a minimum and offer a variety of obedience classes from beginners to advanced and through to trialling.
The Club welcomes new members, dogs of any breed and canine pets of every type.
Our training techniques are kind, and reward based, with emphasis on teaching the owner how to better understand, communicate with and train their dog.

It all started when…
In June 1981, an advertisement was placed in the local paper hoping to attract some interest in obedience classes in the area. The response was far greater than anticipated and the first class was held a Lawson Oval in February 1981.
In June 1982, daytime classes commenced at Mt Victoria and moved to Blackheath in 1985. The club affiliated with the then RASKC in 1982 and we held our first obedience trial at Katoomba Showground in September 1983.
Thank you, helpers and BMCC
The achievements of this club in trialling and obedience would not exist without a tremendous band of willing helpers who turn up to take classes and do the many tiresome tasks so necessary to keep the club going.
The Blue Mountains City Council provides access to grounds and support for dog training. For information on the ovals' status, ring the hotline number 4780 5617 or see the BMCC closures webpage. The BMCC also has useful advice for pet owners.
Thank You To Our Sponsors
The Blue Mountains Dog Training Club Trial Committee is grateful to several sponsors, including Black Dog and Zoo Pets Pty Ltd, who donate dog food and dog treats for the prizes. Please think of them for your dog food and treats.
The Katoomba and Upper Blue Mountains Branch of the Bendigo Bank has continued to be a major sponsor of the Trial and provides on-going support of the operation of the Blue Mountains Dog Training Club.
The generous financial support of the Bendigo Bank has ensured the viability and success of a wonderful day of trialling for many years.

BMDTC Trials
Each year, this club holds a Trial regulated by DOGS NSW, in one or more of the folllowing: Obedience, Rally and Drafting Test.
If you are interested in trialling, whether your dog is a young dog or a more mature dog, has pedigree, is a rescue dog, or is a cross breed, the basic training the dog has received at the club’s obedience training will enable you and your dog to get ready for Obedience Trialling.
The world of trialling also includes such events as the drafting test, agility, herding, tracking, rally, and retrieving. For descriptions, see Types of Shows & Trials on the DOGS NSW site.
Dogs NSW provides a list of trial dates.
To enter a trial, the dog needs to be registered with Dogs NSW, either on the main register or associate register. You also need to become a member of Dogs NSW.
There are five levels of Obedience Trialling in Australia, from ‘Community Companion Dog’ through to ‘Utility Dog Excellent’.
The rules are explained fully in the Obedience Rule Book available from Dogs NSW. All the exercises are based on useful things dogs can do for us, and which make the dog a better companion.

Past Trials
An Inaugural Draft Test (dog pulling a cart) was held in conjunction with the Obedience Trial in 2018.
The advertisement/schedule for the BMDTC Obedience Trial and Draft Test was held 6th July 2019 is available in the Dogs NSW Gazette April 2019. The 2019 Trial Catalogue is available.
In 2020, the Blue Mountains Dog Training Club Obedience Trial and Draft Test was held on July 4.

Trial Committee
The club has a Trial Committee. The Committee works throughout the year to ensure an enjoyable and successful trial. The committee also engages volunteer Stewards to assist the judges in the rings on the day of the trial.
If you are interested in being a Steward or learning more about stewarding, please let the club know.
